Phone Compatibility

Switchboard Cloud integrates with various types of terminals, including both physical phones and virtual phone applications. This flexibility allows each agent to use the device that best suits their needs, while also enabling individual users to have multiple options or extensions associated with their account.

A phone system extension is a specific number or code assigned to an individual phone. Think of it as a sub-number that directs calls to a specific desk, department, or person after the main number has been dialed.

Physical phone devices

1) IP Phones

An IP phone, also known as a VoIP phone, is a physical telephone device that transmits voice calls over the internet rather than through traditional analog phone lines. These phones are specifically designed to work with modern phone systems like Switchboard, making them our most recommended option. They enable you to transfer calls, place calls on hold, access voicemail, and utilize other advanced features directly from the device.

Since not all IP phones are compatible with every phone system, we recommend confirming compatibility with your Switchboard Cloud administrator before making a purchase. We recommend Yealink SIP phones, as we have tested several models and can suggest options that ensure seamless integration with Switchboard Cloud.

2) Mobile Phones

We can route incoming calls to your cell phone if you select it as your active extension. You'll need to use Switchboard Cloud through your web browser to access call management features, such as transferring calls, placing them on hold, or using other available options. You can also initiate outgoing calls from the web interface, which will connect to your cell phone.

Virtual Phones

3) Web Phone

If you want to operate Switchboard Cloud exclusively from your computer and prefer hands-free operation, you can use the same headset for both computer audio and phone calls; with the Web Phone app included with Switchboard Cloud.

Go to the menu option Tools -> Open Web RTC Phone. A new tab will open with your phone app. This tab should remain open, and you should confirm that the status is Registered, which will allow you to make and receive calls.

4) Softphone apps

Softphones are third-party applications that enable users to make phone calls over the internet using a computer, tablet, or smartphone. These applications function as virtual phones, eliminating the need for traditional hardware.

Recommended options:

  • Microsip (Windows) - Free

  • Linphone (Android/iPhone) - Free

  • Zoiper Premium (Android/iPhone) - $4.99 one-time purchase

Important note: While Linphone is free, we've identified compatibility issues with iPhone when the screen is locked. For iPhone users, we recommend investing in Zoiper Premium to ensure reliable performance without interruptions.

Each phone system user can have one or more extensions associated with their account. To set the extension you're currently using, you can easily do so from Switchboard Cloud, with the selector in the top right corner, as shown in the image below.
